When Tom Gilbert and his wife embarked upon significant renovations to their home in Norfolk, they wanted to create a seamless link between the new sun room and their outdoor pool area. Here, Tom talks us through his vision for the new entertaining space, and why choosing the right modern sliding doors was absolutely crucial to the success of the project.
As part of a big project to renovate the whole house, we were looking for modern sliding doors for the sun room leading onto our new pool area. For us, one of the biggest factors was the sightlines. We wanted to achieve the best possible view of the pool from the house, and to create a seamless feel between inside and outside.
It was also really important to us for everything to be completely flush between inside and outside. We knew we’d have older family members visiting, and kids running in and out to the pool area, so we needed to find a glazing company that could create the seamless, free-flowing feel we wanted without the need for any steps.
We were browsing the internet, looking for ideas for the sun room, when we came across an Instagram advert from Minima. There was a lovely shot of sliding doors meeting at a floating corner, and we thought how brilliant it would be to have that for our sun room overlooking the pool. It had exactly the kind of open feel we were looking for.
When we got in touch with Minima, it immediately felt very personal. With other companies, they can make you feel like a number, but with Minima they really knew their stuff and clearly wanted to work with us. They were really enthusiastic about the product and very efficient in all their dealings with us.
Minima Sliding aren’t the cheapest because of the really narrow frame profile of their doors, but they were definitely the best option for us.
The team at Minima were absolutely brilliant to deal with. They kept us fully updated throughout the process, the lead times were exactly as they said they would be, and for the installation they were in and out in a day.
We were a little concerned about the floating corner – that it might experience movement over the seasons with the changes in temperature – but we needn’t have worried. More than a year on, the doors slide just as easily as they did on the day they were installed.
I think it’s the fact that we have connected the inside and outside of the house as one seamless space. It’s become the perfect entertaining area which is exactly what we wanted. We had a big party for my birthday in June and it went so well. The doors have real wow factor and everyone loved what we’ve achieved here.
We were a bit worried about the Great British weather when we decided to put a pool in, but we got lucky this summer. We’ve literally been in the pool every single day. Living with major building work isn’t easy, but it all feels so worth it when we see our daughter happily playing in the pool with her friends.
