Extensions are nothing new for most architects. Clients regularly request an enlargement of their home to create a new kitchen, an extra bedroom or increased living space. But a bathroom reshape? And with a brief to create a bathing experience that would be at one with the outdoor surroundings?

This is the unique project Senior Architect Chloe A from Holland Harvey took on when her clients – a young, creative couple – wanted to create a statement bathroom at their home.

Here, we speak to Chloe about the design process behind the cutting-edge bathroom and why she chose Minima’s sliding doors to help bring her clients’ groundbreaking vision to life.

Tell us a bit about the project…

This project was all about creating a sense of calm and connection with the natural surroundings. Due to the layout of the house, this bathroom was not supposed to have any windows and was going to be very dark but the client wanted a ‘spa-feel’ bathroom. We had to rethink the layout and change the shape to incorporate the doors.

Why did you choose Minima Sliding Doors for the bathroom extension?

Well, floor-to-ceiling windows with minimal frames were absolutely core to the concept of this project.

Minima Sliding could offer the quality and minimal sightlines we wanted, and they were significantly more cost effective than some of the alternatives. They also had the highest performing U-value rating of the options we looked at within this price bracket. That was a real driving factor for us, because there’s no point creating an incredible bathroom if the glass is going to steam up. We also loved the extruded aluminium handle detail with the Minima product. It is touch points like those that really communicate quality.

Tell us more about the new bathroom…

The bathroom features floor-to-ceiling slimline sliding doors that open up directly onto the rocky landscape, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out. The minimalist design of the doors, with their ultra-slim frames, ensures uninterrupted views while allowing natural light to flood the space. Paired with a freestanding bath and clean architectural lines, the result is a serene retreat where luxury meets nature in its purest form.

As an architect, would you recommend Minima Sliding Doors?

Yes, definitely. This is the first time we’ve used Minima Sliding. We’ve been really impressed and very happy with the product. In fact, we’re already considering it for other ongoing projects in the studio.

As well as the doors themselves, another big factor for us has been the lead times with Minima. Some of their competitors have very long lead times, but with Minima has been able to stagger the install of the framing. This has allowed us to continue work on site which means we’ve been able to meet our timescales.
